With Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration having released for PlayStation 4 today, Sony Interactive Entertainment decided to commemorate the two decade run of the franchise by creating a unique trinket for the latest game in the series that will likely remain an elusive collectible to fans for a long while. As it happens, Sony made a PlayStation 1-era CD jewel case for Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, which not only features box art, but also a matching manual.
Although the copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration is housed inside of a PS1-era case, the actual disc itself seems to be for the PlayStation 4. So, it’s safe to say that we won’t be seeing any kind of mock-up production from Sony when it comes to actually manufacturing a replica PS1 disc for Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Of course, considering the fact that Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration includes some retro and polygon-styled skins for Lara Croft — as seen in the game’s launch trailer — developers definitely missed an opportunity to create actual PS1-era packaging for those who pre-ordered the title. Nevertheless, the fact that those who reserved their copies of the the title’s 20 Year Celebration edition got a free game in the form of 2013’s Tomb Raider should assuage pre-ordering fans disappointed by not being able to own the neat little creation seen below.
For those unaware, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration includes the same title that was put out on Xbox One in 2015 and PC earlier this year thanks to publisher Square Enix inking a timed-exclusivity deal. Not to mention, the 20 Year Celebration edition also comes with every single piece of DLC, outfits, and weapons that have been previously released. Plus, fans can also be content with the fact that the game has gotten a new difficulty setting, zombie mode, as well as PlayStation VR support.
As far as Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration‘s release today is concerned, fans have the chance to claim 100,000 free in-game credits across all of the title’s platforms. Of course, one must act fast due to there being a time limit on the deal, so it’s imperative to log into the game as soon as possible on PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Xbox 360 by October 18 to get the free goodies.
Although Rise of the Tomb Raider has been out for nearly a year at this point, a recent study from Nielsen found it to be one of the most anticipated games of the holiday 2016 season. With this being the case, it will be interesting to see if the title’s availability on the PlayStation 4 will outpace the sales figures for its PC and Xbox One counterparts.
